My Patient Experience with Metabolic Surgery for Type 2 Diabetes

At the beginning of my career, I had the opportunity to specialize in the field of metabolic & bariatric surgery. As the years passed, I recognized that many of my patients with type 2 diabetes needed additional support when preparing for and recovering from surgery. This inspired me to become a Certified Diabetes Educator (now known as a Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist).

With my dual specialization, I’ve focused my efforts to bring attention to the overlap between obesity & type 2 diabetes and the use of metabolic & bariatric surgery as a treatment for both. Unfortunately, I still encounter bias from professionals and the public regarding this treatment. With that in mind, I blogged about a patient experience to help people understand that anyone undergoing surgery commits to lifelong work at managing both their obesity & diabetes.
